Kitchen Extension in the Box Conservation Area
Located just off the High Street within the Box Conservation Area, Fairmead View is a single-storey rear extension designed to improve the layout and functionality of the existing home.
The brief was to create a more connected and practical kitchen and dining space while introducing a compact utility room and a separate snug. Importantly, the design retains an independent living room, providing a quieter space within the home – a place to retreat and create a sense of sanctuary away from the main living areas.

Contemporary Timber Cladding
Timber cladding provides the extension with a distinct and contemporary identity. Two different fixing methods are proposed to add subtle variation and texture across the elevations, helping to articulate the two volumes while creating a cohesive overall design.
The result is a modest residential extension that improves the everyday use of the home while responding sensitively to its conservation area setting.

Modest Extension, One Connected Space
The extension is formed from two complementary volumes: a rear extension and an infill side extension. Together, these interventions make more effective use of the existing footprint while creating a small external space directly connected to the house.
This approach was particularly important as the property's generous front and rear gardens are not directly connected, allowing the new extension to introduce a more useful relationship between the internal living spaces and the outside.
The surrounding terrace has seen a variety of extensions over the years, each responding differently to the individual properties. The design for Fairmead View takes its own approach, creating a contemporary addition that respects the established character of the terrace without attempting to replicate it.
