Greengrove, Edington - Contemporary Extension in a Conservation Area
Project: Residential Extension | Heritage | Conservation Area
Location: Edington near Trowbridge
Client: Private
Located within the historically significant hamlet of Edington, Greengrove proposes a contemporary architectural extension to a house with heritage value, situated within a designated conservation area.
Although the existing property is not Listed, its historic character and relationship to the surrounding settlement make it an important part of the local context. The design therefore takes a considered approach to introducing a new architectural intervention, creating a clear contemporary addition while respecting the character of the existing house and its setting.

A New Kitchen and Dining Space
The proposed extension is deliberately adventurous in scale, creating a generous new kitchen and dining area at the heart of the home.
Large areas of glazing provide direct views towards the garden, establishing a strong connection between the new living space and its landscape. The extension is intended to bring more natural light into the house while creating a flexible space for everyday family life, entertaining and dining.
The reorganisation of the existing ground floor also releases space for an additional bedroom, improving the accommodation of the house without compromising the quality of the principal living spaces.
A Contemporary Material Palette
The extension explores a distinctive material palette designed to provide a contemporary counterpoint to the existing property.
Charred timber give the new addition a strong architectural identity while allowing it to sit comfortably within the historic surroundings.
Rather than attempting to replicate the existing architecture, the proposal takes a confident approach to the relationship between old and new. The extension is designed as a modern addition that responds to the scale, character and significance of its conservation area setting.
Greengrove demonstrates how a contemporary cottage extension within a conservation area can provide substantial improvements to family living while responding sensitively to the heritage value of an existing property.
