Situated opposite Worlebury Golf Course in Weston-super-Mare, this former equestrian site and show ground presented an opportunity to transform a modest stone stable into a functional contemporary living space.
The existing stable consists of four individual stables, with solid flooring and a dilapidated mono-pitch roof. Although the building offered clear potential for conversion, the site was not eligible for a Class Q permitted development conversion.
Not every rural building has the benefit of permitted development rights. Good architecture finds a way forward.
The design therefore looks beyond a permitted development solution, working with the character and constraints of the existing building to establish a viable approach to residential conversion.
The existing stone structure provides the starting point for the design. The separating walls between the stables will be selectively adapted to create a more open and functional internal arrangement, while a new access is introduced to the rear elevation.
The intention is to retain the simple character of the original stable while giving the building a new purpose. Rather than disguising its former use, the design works with the existing structure, proportions and materiality to create a home that feels appropriate to its setting.
This is a considered approach to rural conversion making the most of what already exists while introducing the space, light and functionality required for contemporary living.
