Located in the popular area of Bedminster, Bristol, this lower ground floor extension was designed to transform an underused basement and create a bright, practical family space.
The project centres around a new kitchen extension and wrap-around kitchen, providing a generous open-plan area for cooking, dining and family life. Part of the existing basement has also been reclaimed to create a useful utility space, helping to keep the main living areas organised and uncluttered.
Upstairs, the existing kitchen can be repurposed as either a bedroom, home office or flexible additional living space, giving the family greater flexibility as their needs change.
A key consideration was creating a strong connection between the new family space and the existing courtyard garden. The extension provides easy access to the garden, making the most of the outdoor space and creating a natural relationship between inside and out.
The extension is deliberately simple and cost-conscious, using brickwork with subtle detailing to complement the existing property while giving the new addition its own contemporary character. The result is a modern, functional and affordable family extension that makes better use of the available space.
